Richard Strauss' Intermezzo is an autobiographical piece; a domestic comedy of marital strife. Set in the 1920s, John Cox's stylish production stars Felicity Lott as the volatile Christine Storch (alias Pauline Strauss), who has an innocent fling with a penniless young baron (Ian Caley) and then comes to suspect her husband Robert (John Pringle) of carrying on an illicit affair...with ensuing complications. Andrew Porter's brilliant English translation brings out the sharp wit of this piece and gives Felicity Lott's virtuoso talent full rein both musically and theatrically. Martin Battersby's marvellous art nouveau settings evoke perfectly the luxurious lifestyle of Strauss' Vienna. The London Philharmonic, in sparkling form, is conducted by Gustav Kuhn.

Fedora was born a vehicle, devised by the playwright Victorien Sardou to showcase the talents of Sarah Bernhardt, who created the role of the impulsive Russian princess at the Theatre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1882. And a vehicle it has remained, in Giordano's operatic adaptation of 16 years later, for a rare breed of soprano, able to approach both the verismo style and the larger-than-life character with the sort of conviction that makes the piece, and a whole school of popular theatre, live again. In the 1990s, Mirella Freni joined this select band when she took the part into her repertoire, and performed it in opera houses across Europe and the United States.From the moment Fedora appears - in this performance to a shower of applause that stops the music in its tracks - she barely leaves the stage. Her central position is further enhanced by the librettist's ruthless cutting of the play's minor characters and the dilution of radical political convictions to the level of a fashionable accessory sported by some of the characters, almost on a par with the revolvers, bicycles and telegrams that feature in the text. The onus is more than ever on the music to make the characters' impetuous behaviour believable, and Giordano takes the logic of the established verismo device of an orchestral intermezzo one stage further by making it a musical commentary on the heroine's long silent scene alone in the middle of the second act, with the precise reasons for her inner turmoil plotted in a sequence of meaningful motifs.

The culmination of a three-year Monteverdi project led by conductor William Christie and direct Pier Luigi Pizzi at Madrid's Teatro Real, L'incoronazione di Poppea brings a potent blend of sex and politics, high drama and comedy. Leading the cast are Danielle de Niese, Philippe Jaroussky, Max Emanuel Cencic and Anna Bonitatibus. William Christi, who most recently started 2012 at New York's Metropolitan Opera, conducting The Enchanted Island, is joined by the Les Arts Florissants as he evokes a veritable orgy of nuances, subtly creates atmosphere and shows a perfect sense for the accents of the piece. It took Christie and director Pier Luigi Pizzi three years to mount Monteverdi's three operas together. The result was a production full of elegance and beauty. Performed in a new edition of the Venetian version of the opera by the musicologist Jonathan Cable, Poppea features a starry cast. Playing the upwardly mobile temptress of the opera's title is the glamorous American soprano Danielle de Niese, who, in the words of the New York Times, is "seductive enough to woo gods as well as mortals". In an interpretation described as "overwhelming" by El Pais, the capricious Emperor Nero (Nerone) is embodied by French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. The brilliant Croatian countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic plays Nerone's rival for Poppea's love, Ottone, while Nerone's discarded wife Ottavia, is sung by the Italian mezzo soprano Anna Bonitatibus, described by Forumopera as "an incandescent Ottavia who vouchsafed a superb example of singing and of theatre".

Nabucco is the opera which made Verdi the voice of the Italian people. Its theme of an oppressed people's yearning for freedom touched a responsive chord in the Italy of 1842. The stirring passion of Verdi's score proved irresistible in a country increasingly resentful of Austrian rule. "Va pensiero" the great chorus of longing, sung by the exiled Hebrews on the banks of the Euphrates, has become one of the best-loved of operatic melodies, and for Italian patriots in the middle of the 19th century, the chorus quickly became an anthem. The background to the opera is historical: set during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco), King of Babylon.The fictitious characters are Nabucco's daughters, Abigaille and Fenena, who are rivals for the love of Ismaele, nephew of the King of Jerusalem.There is also a powerful bass role for Zaccaria,a Hebrew priest, who brings about the conversion of Nabucco. This performance was recorded at Verona, where the huge open-air Roman Arena provides a magnificent setting for this well-loved and spectacular epic.
