A young woman's body is found early one morning, floating in the therapy pool of a senior complex in Excelsior, Minnesota. No one can identify her -- and the doors leading to the pool are all locked and guarded by cameras, besides. How did she get in? Who is she? And, most important: who wanted her dead? Betsy Devonshire, full-time owner of Crewel World needlework shop, and crafty part-time sleuth, is called in to investigate when the nephew of her friend Bershada is targeted as a suspect. He works as a night watchmen at the senior complex, and the police think he may be the murderer. Meanwhile, an autopsy reveals that the victim was ten weeks pregnant -- and that the lavender-scented water in her lungs came not from the pool but from her own bathtub. This new information clears Bershada's nephew, but implicates someone's else's. Phil, another member of Betsy's beloved Monday bunch of stitchers, is uncle to the young man who had impregnated the murder victim. Betsy's investigation takes her to the apartment the young woman had shared with her two roommates, and there, in a linen closet, she discovers two exquisite antique pillowcases embellished with beautiful Hardanger embroidery -- the very same embroidery that was on a worn, dirty bedsheet brought into her shop by a customer wanting to salvage it. As the tangle of evidence grows, Betsy must summon all of powers of detection -- and her knowledge of the precious, traditional needle art of Hardanger embroidery -- to solve the crime and bring the killer to justice.
