Opportunities and threats of using microbial pest control agents
Цена: 4747.00 р.

Maize, paddy, millet and wheat are the farmers' priority cereals in mid hills of Nepal. The soil inhabiting insects- red ants, white grubs, termites, crickets, cutworms and wire-worms attack almost all cultivated crops causing 12 to 60% losses in mid hill crops. The farmers used almost all the chemical pesticides available in the markets and that further aggravated the pest problem. The severity of those pests is increasing over the years due to haphazard use of chemical pesticides and loss of predators and parasites of the soil pests. The cryptic nature of soil insects makes the other control measures ineffective. The potentiality of endogenous antagonistic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae was tested in the laboratory and the farmers perception on microbial control agents was documented. The fungus isolated from the mid hill farms was tested for its efficacy to white grub control and the hazards to beneficial insects like the mulberry silkworms- Bombyx mori. The further findings and...

Drinking water Quality and Sanitation
Цена: 5415.00 р.

Water is a basic requirement for all life, without which, there is no life. The human right to water entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses .However, 1.1 billion people lack access to improved water sources, which represented 17% of the global population, and in sub-Saharan Africa, 42% of the population is still without improved water. Ghana’s population is increasing rapidly. This has put a lot of pressure on government to provide safe and adequate supply of water. The ability of government to meet this need adequately has been a problem, thereby, has resulted in a gap in the supply and access to safe water to the people. This has resulted in communities have to depend on other unwholesome sources of water which include rainwater, streams, ponds, sachet water, groundwater (mainly through boreholes and wells) and water tanker services. This book therefore, provide information on the quality of these...

Platinum Resistance in Ovarian Cancer
Цена: 7653.00 р.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancy in the United Kingdom and the 4th most common cause of cancer mortality in women. Approximately 1 in 48 women in the UK will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. Surgery followed by chemotherapy involving a platinum-containing compound is the standard treatment for advanced disease. However, despite initial response rates of 70% to platinum-based chemotherapy, chemoresistance frequently develops and is in part responsible for the poor 5-year survival rate of just 30%. In this book, the role of the AKT pathway is examined in acquired platinum resistance using three isogenically matched cell line pairs derived from ovarian cancer patients, pre- and post-platinum resistant relapse. Findings here provide evidence for the role of DNA-PKcs in mediating the activation of AKT in response to DNA DSBs caused by the cytotoxic effects of cisplatin, which is observed in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines,...

Public Participation
Цена: 5715.00 р.

The Public Participation Process (PPP) for Environmental Assessment (EA) is a mandatory procedure to facilitate participation of Interested and Affected Parties (IAAPs) in decision making for proposed development projects. Participation of the vulnerable IAAPs in the PPP is affected by complex challenges. This study investigated the nature and impact of the challenges in the decision making process. Five key challenges: lack of EA legislation awareness; imbalanced power relations; negative past experience; threat to environmental autonomy; and poor project planning affected the PPP cases were analysed in this study. These challenges emanate from internal and external environmental factors. The study maintains that a good understanding of potential challenges associated with development project sites will enable EAPs to design better and more responsive PPP approaches. To achieve this, the study recommends a Dual Approach Planning Model (DAPM). This approach...

Value added wine making process
Цена: 4747.00 р.

Fruits are undoubtedly mans oldest food. The techniques of fruit culture and fruit utilization also received the attention of man at a very early stage. Fruit is attributed as protective foods and these provide kinetic energy to the body. Fruit wines are fermented alcoholic beverages made from a variety of base ingredients (other than grapes). Fruit wines have traditionally been popular with home winemakers. Few foods other than grapes have the balanced quantities of sugar, acid, tannin, nutritive salts for yeast feeding and water to naturally produce a stable and drinkable wine. Many kinds of fruit have a natural acid content which would be too high to produce a savory and pleasant fruit wine in undiluted form. Virtually wine can be made from any substrate having sufficient fermentable sugar, nitrogen source and other requirements for yeast growth. Like many conventional white wines, fruit wines often do not improve with bottle age and are usually meant to be consumed within a year...

Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes continue to be a major part of illness and death. Malaria, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and dengue fever are important diseases vectored by mosquitoes. Dengue fever is becoming more and more vital public health concern in tropical and sub tropical world with Aedes albopictus as the core mosquito vector in this respect. Presently controlling this vector with habitat spraying remains an important option to minimize the incidence of dengue fever. However, the mishandling and/or overuse of synthetic chemicals in public health programs have caused many problems to human beings and environment as well. To lessen these problems, major consideration has been on the use of natural plant based products as larvicides which could provide alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Citrus is one of the most commonly consumed fruits with elements that have mosquitocidal properties and the oils from these are effective against dengue and malarial mosquitoes. This...

Are Bears Our Friends or Enemies?
Цена: 4747.00 р.

The threatened Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) and brown bear (Ursus arctos) are considered nuisances in Japan because of agricultural and property damage as well as occasional human casualties. Sixty four articles from the research and gray literature both in Japan (26) and North America (38) which discuss the human dimensions of bear management were reviewed. A cross-cultural comparison showed that significantly more Japanese thought bears should be extirpated than US respondents. Most Japanese and North American researchers emphasized the importance of education for residents and visitors to reduce human-bear conflicts. This study found that damage by bears can be contributing to the negative attitudes toward these animals in Japan, and therefore wildlife managers and governments need to focus on reducing these damages. Also, effective educational programs need to be conducted for residents so that they can acquire accurate information and skills to prevent bear conflicts....

The network alignment has been formulated formally. While there are some variations among the tools, the key idea is similar: to combine gene sequence information and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network information to find conserved interaction regions across species. A biological interpretation of network alignment is to find functional homologues across different organisms. The general problem, known as the problem of finding common subgraphs across multiple networks, is NP-hard. Heuristic methods combining sequence, interaction and functional similarities have been developed to tackle it. In this book, state of the art introduction for network alignment is conducted from pairwise to multiple species. For pairwise alignment,HopMap and Mawish extension algorithms are presented with high specificity and sensitivity comparing to existing tools. For multiple alignment, the HopeMap-M alignment algorithm is able to align 10 networks with tens of thousands of proteins each in less...
