After data analysis we found that GTN ointment was effective in 85.5% cases with insignificant number of transient complications like headache, pruritus and burning in anal canal.Complications in control arm were also insignificant but healing rate was 25% only.5 patients from the experimental group and 39 patients from placebo treated group were offered lateral...
In order to advance our understanding of self-injury this study (July 2007 to June 2010) investigated the experiences of adults who had used or were using self-injury. This was achieved by obtaining verbal narrative accounts of their experiences of using self-injury from its onset during childhood or early adolescence, throughout adolescence and into adulthood. These verbatim accounts formed a corpus of data which was analysed using a grounded theory method. The analysis established seven robust categories involved in the use of self-injury. By thoroughly examining these categories the substantial theory that self-injury develops as a versatile multi-functional behaviour was generated.
HIV/AIDS leads to a wide spectrum of physical, psychological, social, emotional and economical toll on the sufferer. Discrimination and stigmatization consequent to infection of HIV/AIDS is widespread among families, communities and health-care providers. HIV/AIDS related stigma from health-care workers is a major barrier to effective responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The quality of care given by health-care workers to people living with HIV/AIDS is influenced by their knowledge, attitudes and willingness. Despite the emerging role of physical therapists for people living with HIV/AIDS, there is little information on their knowledge, attitudes and willingness to take care people living with HIV/AIDS. This book presents an assessment of knowledge, attitude and willingness to provide care for people living with HIV/AIDS among physical therapists.

The book illustrated on the prevalence of ID in schoolchildren aged 6-18 years and estimating the iodine content in local water and iodized salt.
Attempts to determine the association between the radiographic and clinical findings of knee pathology have produced conflicting results. It is also not yet known how knee radiographs influence the conservative management of patients with knee pain. The objective of the study is to determine the association between the clinical and radiographic diagnoses of knee pain and to record the suspected clinical diagnoses and management of the patients prior to referral for radiographs of the knee. The study will also determine any change in the clinical diagnoses and management following radiographic reporting of the selected radiographs. Degenerative changes were the most common radiographic findings. The majority of the knee radiographs were requested at the initial consultation and as the length of treatment increased, the frequency of radiograph requests decreased. Knee radiographs were over-utilized at the CDC and the findings on radiography did not have much influence on the...
Paired kidneys are reddish bean shaped organs about 10-12cm long, 5-7cm wide, 3cm thick and has a mass of 135-150g.10 The kidneys lie on the posterior abdominal wall, one on each side of vertebral column, behind the peritoneum and below diaphragm. They extend from the level of 12th thoracic vertebrae to 3rd lumbar vertebrae. The main function of kidney can be categorized as Formation of urine, Water & electrolyte balance, Production of hormones & enzymes. In the resting adult, kidney receives 1.2-1.3litres of blood/min. In an adult, the GFR averages 120ml/min. The collecting duct of kidney is an area of fine control of ultrafiltrate composition & volume, where final adjustment in electrolyte composition is made by the action of mineralocortioid & ADH. The hypertonicity of medullary interstitium plays an important role in concentrating the urine. The kidney not only excretes the metabolic substances, but also toxic agents from the body.6 Hence kidney becomes one...

This manuscript describes a parameter modification to the Radcalc software model such that it would be able to provide a valid check to the predicted radiation doses from the Monte Carlo treatment planning system. Thus the polynomial correction model obtained provides a simple but robust and empirically sound correction to the Radcalc commercial software such that monitor unit calculations from the Monte Carlo TPS may by verified for post mastectomy chest wall irradiation cases. This provides the medical physicist confidence that any persistent differences should be investigated as possibly due to an actual systematic error unassociated with a failure of the predictive model.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the Gold Standard treatment modality for the treatment of cholelithiasis. But some factors may play part and lead to conversion to the open surgery! Distorted anatomy at Calots triangle and Haemorrhage that can not be controlled, are important contributory factors causing this un-planned conversion. This thesis is an important matter which discusses the details of gall bladder stones, their presentation, differt modes of treatment and the laparoscopic chlecystectomy! differnt factors leading to conversion are also discussed in details! this shall be an important and easy to understand knowledge to medical students, interns & residents.
The journey of nurse addiction comes as a surprise for most who experience it. This phenomenological qualitative study demonstrates that most nurses who become addicted never imagined addiction would happen to them, even if they have a strong family history of the disease! In this study, 14 nurse addicts in recovery were interviewed about their experiences and risk perceptions. Five themes were identified from the study: (a) Fear was a significant part of the experience of being a nurse who was addicted; (b) Shame and guilt were felt by nurses who were addicted; (c) Poor coping: Addicted nurses reported having underdeveloped coping skills; (d) Control: Addicted nurses felt an increased need to control their environments; and (e) A core problem inherent in nurses who were addicted was a belief that addiction would never happen to them. Discussion of the five identified themes is followed by a discussion about addiction risk, prevention, and suggestions for application in nursing...
Postoperative stroke is a dreaded problem in cardiac surgery and atherosclerosis of the ascending aorta (AAA) is an important risk factor. The risk from calcified AAA, the extent and the topography of the disease in the development of stroke was evaluated. We also determined the most important risk factors for aortic embolization of particles with an intra-aortic filter. Moreover, we studied if conversion from a planned on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) affected the incidence of postoperative stroke. Furthermore, we investigated if preoperative computer tomograpy (CT) was comparable with intraoperative epiaortic ultrasound to diagnose AAA. Finally, we evaluated the relationship between the topography of aortic atherosclerosis and the incidence of late stroke after coronary surgery.
Information on causes of death is extremely important for policy-making, planning, monitoring and evaluation of health programs as well as for field research, comparisons and epidemic awareness. The Millennium Development Goal for India is to reduce infant mortality rate to 35 per 1000 & under-five mortality to 45 per 1000 live births by 2015.The incorporation of Verbal Autopsy (VA) in the existing Registration Systems is necessary in order to fulfil its ultimate goal of improving the information on causes of infant deaths in areas where Civil Registration and Death Certification are weak. VA provides information for local action by health authorities to reduce the infant mortality rate according to area-specific causes of death. The book is intended to policy makers, program managers working in child health, academicians, researchers and medical graduates to improve the lives of the young ones and identify the social and non medical causes related to infant deaths. This book...
